Case Studies of SAP Calculations in London

RS Energy provides a range of SAP Calculation in London, Oxford and the Hampshire area. See below for examples of past projects where we have offered our tailored consulting services.

Case Study 1

L1b SAP Calculations were undertaken to justify exceeding the 25% glazing allowance on a new extension to an existing property in London.

We carry out ‘whole house’ SAP calculations to demonstrate compliance. This consists of modelling the existing house with a notional dwelling of the same size and orientation but only having 25% glazing, in relation to new floor area. We then complete another calculation with the existing house and the proposed ‘as designed’ extension. We can then compare the carbon emissions for the notional and proposed to ensure that compliance is achieved.

Case Study 3

Conversion of a London house into apartments. Two apartments will be created in a former house. L1b SAP Calculations have been carried out at the design stage to ensure that the elemental u-values are met. For many developers a good EPC rating is vitally important. Along with the SAP calculations we also produce a PEA (predicted EPC) so that we can see what the EPC rating will be once the build is complete. At the design stage, insulation can be increased, windows can be upgraded and heating systems changed in order to meet the desired target.

Case Study 4

SAP Calculations have been carried out on this new build project of 5 dwellings in London all meeting London Plan energy efficiency requirements.
We were instructed at the design stage to carry out the SAP calculations. This is the best time to secure the calculations as any problems with compliance can be rectified saving time and money.

Due to the dwellings needing to meet the London Plan energy efficiency requirements, the fabric of the dwellings have been improved beyond the notional dwelling in SAP 2012 and photovoltaic panels will also be installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are SAP Calculations?

Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the government adopted methodology for calculating energy performance in domestic properties. Introduced into Building Regulations in  1995, this is a vital step towards improving the energy performance of buildings, and reducing CO2 emissions.

Why Are SAP Calculations Required?

SAP Calculations are required in order to increase energy efficiency, and reduce CO2 emissions in domestic buildings.

With over 40% of energy use in the EU being directly attributable to the operation of buildings, and 44% of the UK’s carbon emissions resulting from buildings, addressing energy use and emissions in buildings has the potential to make a substantial difference to the overall energy usage and total carbon emissions in Europe.

The last government made a legally binding commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80%, relative to 1990 levels, by 2050.  As a result of these efforts to address greenhouse gas emission rates, more stringent regulations around building emissions are now in force.

When are SAP Calculations Required?

SAP calculations are required on all new residential dwellings, as well as a predicted EPC rating. All residential conversions and some residential extensions also require SAP calculations prior to work beginning. This is required under Part L of the Building Regulations.
